قَالَ ٱلْمَلَأُ مِن قَوْمِ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَسَـٰحِرٌ عَلِيمٌ ﴿109﴾
The chiefs of the people of Fir‘aun (Pharaoh) said: "This is indeed a well-versed sorcerer;
قَالَ qāla Said
ٱلْمَلَأُ l-mala-u the chiefs
مِن min of
قَوْمِ qawmi (the) people
فِرْعَوْنَ fir'ʿawna (of) Firaun
إِنَّ inna Indeed
هَـٰذَا hādhā this
لَسَـٰحِرٌ lasāḥirun (is) surely a magician
عَلِيمٌۭ ʿalīmun learned

19. 1. After witnessing the miracles, instead of believing, Pharaoh’s courtiers declared them to be magic and said that he is a great magician whose purpose is to end your rule, because in the time of Musa عليه, magic was very prevalent and commonly practiced. Therefore, they considered the miracles to be magic, even though there is no human involvement in them at all. They manifest purely by Allah’s will. Nevertheless, the courtiers found an opportunity to mislead Pharaoh regarding Musa ؑ.
