قَالُوا۟ سُبْحَـٰنَ رَبِّنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِينَ ﴿29﴾
They said: "Glory to Our Lord! Verily, we have been Zâlimûn (wrong-doers)."
قَالُوا۟ qālū They said
سُبْحَـٰنَ sub'ḥāna Glory be
رَبِّنَآ rabbinā (to) our Lord
إِنَّا innā Indeed, we
كُنَّا kunnā [we] were
ظَـٰلِمِينَ ẓālimīna wrongdoers

29. 1. That is, now they realized that by taking a step against the conduct of our father, we committed a mistake for which Allah has punished us. From this, it is also understood that the determination to commit a sin and the initial steps taken towards it are also crimes like the actual commission of the sin, for which one can be held accountable. Only that intention is forgiven which remains at the level of a mere thought (whisper).
