سُوْرَةُ الْمُلْكِ

Surah Al-Mulk (67) — Ayah 5

وَلَقَدْ زَيَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَآءَ ٱلدُّنْيَا بِمَصَـٰبِيحَ وَجَعَلْنَـٰهَا رُجُومًا لِّلشَّيَـٰطِينِ ۖ وَأَعْتَدْنَا لَهُمْ عَذَابَ ٱلسَّعِيرِ ﴿5﴾
And indeed We have adorned the nearest heaven with lamps, and We have made such lamps (as) missiles to drive away the Shayâtîn (devils), and have prepared for them the torment of the blazing Fire.
وَلَقَدْ walaqad And certainly
زَيَّنَّا zayyannā We have beautified
ٱلسَّمَآءَ l-samāa the heaven
ٱلدُّنْيَا l-dun'yā nearest
بِمَصَـٰبِيحَ bimaṣābīḥa with lamps
وَجَعَلْنَـٰهَا wajaʿalnāhā and We have made them
رُجُومًۭا rujūman (as) missiles
لِّلشَّيَـٰطِينِ ۖ lilshayāṭīni for the devils
وَأَعْتَدْنَا wa-aʿtadnā and We have prepared
لَهُمْ lahum for them
عَذَابَ ʿadhāba punishment
ٱلسَّعِيرِ l-saʿīri (of) the Blaze

Here, two purposes of the stars have been mentioned: one, the adornment of the heavens because they burn like lamps; second, when the devils try to ascend towards the heavens, these fall upon them as flames. The third purpose is that which has been mentioned at other places, that they are used for navigation on land and sea.
