Surah Al-Munaafiqoon (63) — Ayah 8

The Hypocrites · Medinan · Juz 28 · Page 555

They (hyprocrites) say: "If we return to Al-Madinah, indeed the more honourable (‘Abdullâh bin Ubai bin Salûl, the chief of hyprocrites at Al-Madinah) will expel therefrom the meaner (i.e. Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم)." But honour, power and glory belong to Allâh, and to His Messenger (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), and to the believers, but the hypocrites know not.
يَقُولُونَ yaqūlūna They say
لَئِن la-in If
رَّجَعْنَآ rajaʿnā we return
إِلَى ilā to
ٱلْمَدِينَةِ l-madīnati Al-Madinah
لَيُخْرِجَنَّ layukh'rijanna surely, will expel
ٱلْأَعَزُّ l-aʿazu the more honorable
مِنْهَا min'hā from it
ٱلْأَذَلَّ ۚ l-adhala the more humble
وَلِلَّهِ walillahi But for Allah
ٱلْعِزَّةُ l-ʿizatu (is) the honor
وَلِرَسُولِهِۦ walirasūlihi and for His Messenger
وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ walil'mu'minīna and for the believers
وَلَـٰكِنَّ walākinna but
ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ l-munāfiqīna the hypocrites
لَا (do) not
يَعْلَمُونَ yaʿlamūna know

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

8. 1. Its speaker was the chief of the hypocrites, Abdullah bin Ubayy. By "the honorable one," he meant himself and his companions, and by "the lowly one" (Allah forbid), he meant the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Muslims.
8. 2. That is, honor and dominance belong only to the One Allah, and then He grants honor and dominance to whomever He wills from His side.
8. 3. Therefore, they do not do those things which are beneficial for them, nor do they avoid those things which are harmful for them.
