This is the Guidance of Allâh with which He guides whomsoever He wills of His slaves. But if they had joined in worship others with Allâh, all that they used to do would have been of no benefit to them.

88. 1. After mentioning the noble names of eighteen prophets, Allah Almighty is saying that if these personalities had also committed shirk, then all their deeds would have been rendered void. Just as in another place, addressing the Prophet ﷺ, Allah Almighty said, "O Prophet! If you also commit shirk, all your deeds will be rendered void," although it is not possible for prophets to commit shirk. The purpose is to warn the communities about the dangerous and destructive nature of shirk.
