The Cattle · Meccan · Juz 8 · Page 143

Is he who was dead (without Faith by ignorance and disbelief) and We gave him life (by knowledge and Faith) and set for him a light (of Belief) whereby he can walk amongst men - like him who is in the darkness (of disbelief, polytheism and hypocrisy) from which he can never come out? Thus it is made fair-seeming to the disbelievers that which they used to do.
أَوَمَن awaman Is (one) who
كَانَ kāna was
مَيْتًۭا maytan dead
فَأَحْيَيْنَـٰهُ fa-aḥyaynāhu and We gave him life
وَجَعَلْنَا wajaʿalnā and We made
لَهُۥ lahu for him
نُورًۭا nūran light
يَمْشِى yamshī he walks
بِهِۦ bihi whereby
فِى among
ٱلنَّاسِ l-nāsi the people
كَمَن kaman like (one) who
مَّثَلُهُۥ mathaluhu [similar to him]
فِى (is) in
ٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِ l-ẓulumāti the darknesses
لَيْسَ laysa not
بِخَارِجٍۢ bikhārijin he comes out
مِّنْهَا ۚ min'hā of it
كَذَٰلِكَ kadhālika Thus
زُيِّنَ zuyyina is made fair-seeming
لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ lil'kāfirīna to the disbelievers
مَا what
كَانُوا۟ kānū they were
يَعْمَلُونَ yaʿmalūna doing

122. 1. In this verse, Allah Almighty has declared the disbelievers as mayyit (dead) and the believer as hayy (alive). This is because the disbelievers wanders in the darkness of disbelief and misguidance and is unable to come out of it, the result of which is destruction and ruin. And Allah Almighty revives the heart of the believer through faith, by which the paths of life become illuminated for him and he sets out on the path of faith and guidance, the result of which is success and prosperity. This is the same theme that has been mentioned in the following verses: Surah Baqarah 257, Surah Hud 24, Surah Fatir, 19, 22,
