Surah Al-Hadid (57) — Ayah 14

يُنَادُونَهُمْ أَلَمْ نَكُن مَّعَكُمْ ۖ قَالُوا۟ بَلَىٰ وَلَـٰكِنَّكُمْ فَتَنتُمْ أَنفُسَكُمْ وَتَرَبَّصْتُمْ وَٱرْتَبْتُمْ وَغَرَّتْكُمُ ٱلْأَمَانِىُّ حَتَّىٰ جَآءَ أَمْرُ ٱللَّهِ وَغَرَّكُم بِٱللَّهِ ٱلْغَرُورُ ﴿14﴾
(The hypocrites) will call the believers: "Were we not with you?" The believers will reply: "Yes! But you led yourselves into temptations, you looked forward for our destruction; you doubted (in Faith) and you were deceived by false desires, till the Command of Allâh came to pass. And the chief deceiver (Satan) deceived you in respect of Allâh."
يُنَادُونَهُمْ yunādūnahum They will call them
أَلَمْ alam Were not
نَكُن nakun we
مَّعَكُمْ ۖ maʿakum with you
قَالُوا۟ qālū They will say
بَلَىٰ balā Yes
وَلَـٰكِنَّكُمْ walākinnakum but you
فَتَنتُمْ fatantum led to temptation
أَنفُسَكُمْ anfusakum yourselves
وَتَرَبَّصْتُمْ watarabbaṣtum and you awaited
وَٱرْتَبْتُمْ wa-ir'tabtum and you doubted
وَغَرَّتْكُمُ wagharratkumu and deceived you
ٱلْأَمَانِىُّ l-amāniyu the wishful thinking
حَتَّىٰ ḥattā until
جَآءَ jāa came
أَمْرُ amru (the) Command
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah
وَغَرَّكُم wagharrakum And deceived you
بِٱللَّهِ bil-lahi about Allah
ٱلْغَرُورُ l-gharūru the deceiver

14-1. That is, when there is a barrier wall, the hypocrites will say to the Muslims that in the world did we not pray with you and participate in jihad, etc.
14-2. You had concealed disbelief and hypocrisy in your hearts.
14-3. That perhaps the Muslims might fall into some misfortune.
14-4. In matters of religion, that is why you did not accept the Quran nor the proofs and miracles.
14-5. In which Satan kept you entangled.
14-6. That is, death came to you, or ultimately the Muslims prevailed and your hopes were dashed.
14-7. That is, because of Allah's forbearance and His law of respite, Satan kept deceiving you.
