Surah Al-Qamar (54) — Ayah 37

وَلَقَدْ رَٰوَدُوهُ عَن ضَيْفِهِۦ فَطَمَسْنَآ أَعْيُنَهُمْ فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ ﴿37﴾
And they indeed sought to shame his guest (by asking to commit sodomy with them). So We blinded their eyes, (saying) "Then taste you My Torment and My Warnings."
وَلَقَدْ walaqad And certainly
رَٰوَدُوهُ rāwadūhu they demanded from him
عَن ʿan they demanded from him
ضَيْفِهِۦ ḍayfihi his guests
فَطَمَسْنَآ faṭamasnā so We blinded
أَعْيُنَهُمْ aʿyunahum their eyes
فَذُوقُوا۟ fadhūqū So taste
عَذَابِى ʿadhābī My punishment
وَنُذُرِ wanudhuri and My warnings

37. 1. Either they deceived or demanded from Lot (AS) his guests. The meaning is that when the people of Lot (AS) found out that a few handsome young men had come to Lot (AS) (who were actually angels and had come to inflict punishment upon them), they demanded from Prophet Lot (AS) that he hand over these guests to them so that they could satisfy their corrupted desires with them. (2) It is said that these angels were Jibril, Mikail, and Israfil (peace be upon them). When they insisted even more to take the angels (guests) with the intention of committing immorality, Jibril (AS) struck them with a part of his wing, due to which their eyeballs came out, and some say only their eyesight was taken away. In any case, before the general punishment, this special punishment befell those who had come to Prophet Lot (AS) with evil intentions. And being deprived of their eyes or sight, they returned home. And in the morning, they were destroyed in that general punishment which came upon the entire nation. (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)
