Surah Qaaf (50) — Ayah 36

وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُم مِّن قَرْنٍ هُمْ أَشَدُّ مِنْهُم بَطْشًا فَنَقَّبُوا۟ فِى ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ هَلْ مِن مَّحِيصٍ ﴿36﴾
And how many a generation We have destroyed before them who were stronger in power than they. And (when Our Torment came), they ran for a refuge in the land! Could they find any place of refuge (for them to save themselves from destruction)?
وَكَمْ wakam And how many
أَهْلَكْنَا ahlaknā We destroyed
قَبْلَهُم qablahum before them
مِّن min of
قَرْنٍ qarnin a generation
هُمْ hum they
أَشَدُّ ashaddu (were) stronger
مِنْهُم min'hum than them
بَطْشًۭا baṭshan (in) power
فَنَقَّبُوا۟ fanaqqabū so they explored
فِى throughout
ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ l-bilādi the lands
هَلْ hal Is (there)
مِن min any
مَّحِيصٍ maḥīṣin place of escape

36. 1 (فَنقبُوْفِی الْبِلَادِ) (wandering in the cities) has been explained to mean that they used to travel to various cities for trade and business more than the people of Makkah. But when Our punishment came, they found no refuge or way to escape anywhere.
