يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَيَبْلُوَنَّكُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِشَىْءٍ مِّنَ ٱلصَّيْدِ تَنَالُهُۥٓ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَرِمَاحُكُمْ لِيَعْلَمَ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَخَافُهُۥ بِٱلْغَيْبِ ۚ فَمَنِ ٱعْتَدَىٰ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ فَلَهُۥ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ ﴿94﴾
O you who believe! Allâh will certainly make a trial of you with something in (the matter of) the game that is well within the reach of your hands and your lances, that Allâh may test him who fears Him unseen. Then whoever transgresses thereafter, for him there is a painful torment.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا yāayyuhā O you
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna who
ءَامَنُوا۟ āmanū believe
لَيَبْلُوَنَّكُمُ layabluwannakumu Surely will test you
ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah
بِشَىْءٍۢ bishayin through something
مِّنَ mina of
ٱلصَّيْدِ l-ṣaydi the game
تَنَالُهُۥٓ tanāluhu can reach it
أَيْدِيكُمْ aydīkum your hands
وَرِمَاحُكُمْ warimāḥukum and your spears
لِيَعْلَمَ liyaʿlama that may make evident
ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah
مَن man who
يَخَافُهُۥ yakhāfuhu fears Him
بِٱلْغَيْبِ ۚ bil-ghaybi in the unseen
فَمَنِ famani And whoever
ٱعْتَدَىٰ iʿ'tadā transgressed
بَعْدَ baʿda after
ذَٰلِكَ dhālika that
فَلَهُۥ falahu then for him
عَذَابٌ ʿadhābun (is) a punishment
أَلِيمٌۭ alīmun painful

94. 1 Hunting was an important element of livelihood for the Arabs, therefore, by prohibiting it in the state of Ihram, they were tested. Especially during the stay at Hudaybiyyah, game would frequently come near the companions, but during those very days, 4 verses were revealed in which the relevant rulings were stated.

94. 2 Nearby game or small animals were generally caught by hand, while arrows and spears were used for distant or large animals. That is why only these two are mentioned here. But the meaning is that however and with whatever is used for hunting, it is prohibited in the state of Ihram.
