O you who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians as Auliyâ’ (friends, protectors, helpers), they are but Auliyâ’ of each other. And if any amongst you takes them (as Auliyâ’), then surely he is one of them. Verily, Allâh guides not those people who are the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers and unjust).

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

51. 1 In this, it is forbidden to establish a bond of alliance and love with the Jews and Christians who are enemies of Islam and Muslims, and such a severe warning has been stated that whoever befriends them will be considered among them. (See also the commentary of Surah Al-Imran, verse 28 and verse 118)

51. 2 Every person can observe the reality stated by the Quran that although the Jews and Christians have severe differences and mutual hatred and enmity in terms of beliefs, despite this, they are supporters, allies, and protectors of each other against Islam and Muslims.

51. 3 It is stated regarding the circumstances of the revelation of these verses that Hazrat Ubadah bin Samit Ansari ؓ and the chief of the hypocrites Abdullah bin Ubayy were both allies of the Jews since the era of ignorance. When the Muslims achieved victory at Badr, Abdullah bin Ubayy also professed Islam. Meanwhile, the Jews of Banu Qaynuqa caused a disturbance a few days later and were expelled, upon which Hazrat Ubadah ؓ declared disassociation from his Jewish allies. But Abdullah bin Ubayy, on the contrary, made every possible effort to save the Jews. Upon this, these verses were revealed.
