قَالُوا۟ يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ إِنَّا لَن نَّدْخُلَهَآ أَبَدًا مَّا دَامُوا۟ فِيهَا ۖ فَٱذْهَبْ أَنتَ وَرَبُّكَ فَقَـٰتِلَآ إِنَّا هَـٰهُنَا قَـٰعِدُونَ ﴿24﴾
They said: "O Mûsâ (Moses)! We shall never enter it as long as they are there. So go you and your Lord and fight you two, we are sitting right here."
قَالُوا۟ qālū They said
يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ yāmūsā O Musa
إِنَّا innā Indeed, we
لَن lan never
نَّدْخُلَهَآ nadkhulahā will enter it
أَبَدًۭا abadan ever
مَّا for
دَامُوا۟ dāmū as long as they are
فِيهَا ۖ fīhā in it
فَٱذْهَبْ fa-idh'hab So go
أَنتَ anta you
وَرَبُّكَ warabbuka and your Lord
فَقَـٰتِلَآ faqātilā and you both fight
إِنَّا innā Indeed, we
هَـٰهُنَا hāhunā are [here]
قَـٰعِدُونَ qāʿidūna sitting

24. 1. But despite this, the Children of Israel displayed the worst cowardice, disrespect, and rebellion, saying: "You and your Lord go and fight." In contrast, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ consulted the noble companions at the time of the Battle of Badr, they expressed strong determination to participate in jihad despite their small numbers and limited resources, and then said: "O Messenger of Allah! We will not say to you as the people of Musa said to Musa (عليه السلام)" (Sahih Bukhari).
