Surah Al-Maaida (5) — Ayah 14

وَمِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا نَصَـٰرَىٰٓ أَخَذْنَا مِيثَـٰقَهُمْ فَنَسُوا۟ حَظًّا مِّمَّا ذُكِّرُوا۟ بِهِۦ فَأَغْرَيْنَا بَيْنَهُمُ ٱلْعَدَاوَةَ وَٱلْبَغْضَآءَ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۚ وَسَوْفَ يُنَبِّئُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَصْنَعُونَ ﴿14﴾
And from those who call themselves Christians, We took their covenant, but they have abandoned a good part of the Message that was sent to them. So We planted amongst them enmity and hatred till the Day of Resurrection (when they discarded Allâh’s Book, disobeyed Allâh’s Messengers and His Orders and transgressed beyond bounds in Allâh’s disobedience); and Allâh will inform them of what they used to do.
وَمِنَ wamina And from
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who
قَالُوٓا۟ qālū said
إِنَّا innā Indeed we
نَصَـٰرَىٰٓ naṣārā (are) Christians
أَخَذْنَا akhadhnā We took
مِيثَـٰقَهُمْ mīthāqahum their covenant
فَنَسُوا۟ fanasū but they forgot
حَظًّۭا ḥaẓẓan a part
مِّمَّا mimmā of what
ذُكِّرُوا۟ dhukkirū they were reminded
بِهِۦ bihi of [it]
فَأَغْرَيْنَا fa-aghraynā So We aroused
بَيْنَهُمُ baynahumu between them
ٱلْعَدَاوَةَ l-ʿadāwata [the] enmity
وَٱلْبَغْضَآءَ wal-baghḍāa and [the] hatred
إِلَىٰ ilā till
يَوْمِ yawmi (the) Day
ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۚ l-qiyāmati (of) the Resurrection
وَسَوْفَ wasawfa And soon
يُنَبِّئُهُمُ yunabbi-uhumu will inform them
ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah
بِمَا bimā of what
كَانُوا۟ kānū they used to
يَصْنَعُونَ yaṣnaʿūna do

14. 1 Nasara is from nusrah, meaning help. This is derived from the response of the sincere followers of Isa (علیہ السلام) to his question (من انصاری الی اللہ) "Who are my helpers in the cause of Allah?" They replied (نحن انصار اللہ) "We are the helpers of Allah." Like the Jews, they are also People of the Book. Allah Almighty also took a covenant from them, but they did not care for it. As a result, their hearts also became devoid of receptivity and their character became hollow.

14. 2 This is the punishment for deviating from the divine covenant and for inaction, which Allah Almighty has imposed upon them until the Day of Resurrection. Thus, there are many sects among the Christians who harbor intense hatred and enmity towards each other, declare each other disbelievers, and do not worship in each other's places of worship. It appears that this punishment has also been imposed upon the Muslim Ummah. This Ummah has also been divided into many sects, between whom there are severe differences and walls of hatred and enmity. May Allah Almighty have mercy.
