Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
(Remember) when Al-Hawâriyyûn (the disciples) said: "O ‘Îsâ (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)! Can your Lord send down to us a table spread (with food) from heaven?" ‘Îsâ (Jesus) said: "Fear Allâh, if you are indeed believers."

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
112. 1. مَائِدَۃً refers to such a vessel (tray, plate, or similar) in which there is food. That is why it is also translated as "dining spread" because food is also laid out on it. The name of the surah is also due to this relevance, as it is mentioned in it. The disciples made this request for further reassurance of heart, just as Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) expressed the desire to witness the revival of the dead. 212. 2. That is, do not ask this question; it is possible that it may become a cause of your trial, because after a miracle is shown as requested, any weakness in faith from that nation can become a cause of punishment. Therefore, Prophet Isa (peace be upon him) stopped them from this demand and warned them to fear Allah. From this, it is understood that those who have argued from the word "revelation" that the mother of Musa (peace be upon him) and Maryam were prophets, because revelation also came to them from Allah, are not correct. Because this revelation was only inspirational revelation, just as here in اوحیت الی الحوارین, it is not the revelation of prophethood.
