إِن يَسْـَٔلْكُمُوهَا فَيُحْفِكُمْ تَبْخَلُوا۟ وَيُخْرِجْ أَضْغَـٰنَكُمْ ﴿37﴾
If He were to ask you of it, and press you, you would covetously withhold, and He will bring out all your (secret) ill-wills.
إِن in If

فَيُحْفِكُمْ fayuḥ'fikum and press you
تَبْخَلُوا۟ tabkhalū you will withhold
وَيُخْرِجْ wayukh'rij and He will bring forth
أَضْغَـٰنَكُمْ aḍghānakum your hatred

37. 1. That is, if someone demands all of your wealth beyond your needs, and does so insistently and forcefully, then it is human nature that you will become stingy and also express your malice and enmity against Islam, and in this situation, even against Islam itself, enmity will arise in your hearts that this is a fine religion which wants to gather all the earnings of our hard work into its own fold.
