Surah Muhammad (47) — Ayah 18

Muhammad · Medinan · Juz 26 · Page 508

Do they then await (anything) other than the Hour, that it should come upon them suddenly? But some of its portents (indications and signs) have already come; and when it (actually) is on them, how can they benefit then by their reminder?
فَهَلْ fahal Then do
يَنظُرُونَ yanẓurūna they wait
إِلَّا illā but
ٱلسَّاعَةَ l-sāʿata (for) the Hour
أَن an that

بَغْتَةًۭ ۖ baghtatan suddenly
فَقَدْ faqad But indeed

ذِكْرَىٰهُمْ dhik'rāhum their reminder

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

18. 1. That is, the very advent of the Prophet ﷺ is itself a sign of the nearness of the Hour, as he ﷺ also said: بعثت انا والساعۃ کھاتین. Sahih Bukhari. "My advent and the Hour are like these two fingers." He ﷺ indicated and clarified that just as these two fingers are joined together, similarly the Hour is right after me.

18. 2. That is, when the Hour suddenly comes, how will the disbelievers be able to take admonition? The meaning is that even if they repent at that time, it will not be accepted. Therefore, if one wants to repent, now is the time; otherwise, a time may come when even their repentance will be of no benefit.
