سُوْرَةُ الْاَحْقَافِ
Surah Al-Ahqaf (46) — Ayah 28
فَلَوْلَا نَصَرَهُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ قُرْبَانًا ءَالِهَةًۢ ۖ بَلْ ضَلُّوا۟ عَنْهُمْ ۚ وَذَٰلِكَ إِفْكُهُمْ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ يَفْتَرُونَ ﴿28﴾
Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
Then why did those whom they had taken for âlihah (gods) besides Allâh, as a way of approach (to Allâh) not help them? Nay, but they vanished completely from them (when there came the torment). And that was their lie, and their inventions which they had been inventing (before their destruction).

28. 1. That is, those deities whom they considered as a means of attaining nearness to Allah did not help them at all; rather, they did not even appear at that moment but were lost. From this, it is also evident that the polytheists of Makkah did not consider the idols as gods, but rather as a means and intermediary for nearness in the court of Allah. Allah has here declared this means as a lie and fabrication, making it clear that this is unlawful and forbidden.
