أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ حَقَّ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْقَوْلُ فِىٓ أُمَمٍ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ وَٱلْإِنسِ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ خَـٰسِرِينَ ﴿18﴾

Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali

They are those against whom the Word (of torment) is justified among the previous generations of jinn and mankind that have passed away. Verily, they are ever the losers.

Word by Word — Arabic, Transliteration & Meaning

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ulāika Those
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna (are) the ones
حَقَّ ḥaqqa (has) proved true
عَلَيْهِمُ ʿalayhimu against them
ٱلْقَوْلُ l-qawlu the word
فِىٓ fī among
أُمَمٍۢ umamin nations
قَدْ qad (that) already passed away
خَلَتْ khalat (that) already passed away
مِن min before them
قَبْلِهِم qablihim before them
مِّنَ mina of
ٱلْجِنِّ l-jini (the) jinn
وَٱلْإِنسِ ۖ wal-insi and the men
إِنَّهُمْ innahum Indeed, they
كَانُوا۟ kānū are
خَـٰسِرِينَ khāsirīna (the) losers

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf

18. 1 That which was already in Allah's knowledge, or in response to Satan to whom Allah said (لَاَمْلَــــَٔنَّ جَهَنَّمَ مِنْكَ وَمِمَّنْ تَبِعَكَ مِنْهُمْ اَجْمَعِيْنَ) 38. Saad:85).

18. 2 That is, they too became included among those disbelievers from among humans and jinn who will be among the losers on the Day of Resurrection.
