وَمَا نُرِيهِم مِّنْ ءَايَةٍ إِلَّا هِىَ أَكْبَرُ مِنْ أُخْتِهَا ۖ وَأَخَذْنَـٰهُم بِٱلْعَذَابِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ ﴿48﴾
And not an Ayâh (sign, etc.) We showed them but it was greater than its fellow , and We seized them with torment, in order that they might turn [from their polytheism to Allâh’s religion (Islâmic Monotheism)].
وَمَا wamā And not
نُرِيهِم nurīhim We showed them
مِّنْ min of
ءَايَةٍ āyatin a Sign
إِلَّا illā but
هِىَ hiya it
أَكْبَرُ akbaru (was) greater
مِنْ min than
أُخْتِهَا ۖ ukh'tihā its sister
وَأَخَذْنَـٰهُم wa-akhadhnāhum and We seized them
بِٱلْعَذَابِ bil-ʿadhābi with the punishment
لَعَلَّهُمْ laʿallahum so that they may
يَرْجِعُونَ yarjiʿūna return

48. 1. By these signs are meant those signs which were shown to them one after another in the form of the flood, locusts, lice, frogs, and blood, etc., which have already been mentioned in Surah Al-A'raf, verses (فَاَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ الطُّوْفَانَ وَالْجَرَادَ وَالْقُمَّلَ وَالضَّفَادِعَ وَالدَّمَ اٰيٰتٍ مُّفَصَّلٰتٍ فَاسْتَكْبَرُوْا وَكَانُوْاقَوْمًا مُّجْرِمِيْنَ 133؁ وَلَمَّا وَقَعَ عَلَيْهِمُ الرِّجْزُ قَالُوْا يٰمُوْسَى ادْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ بِمَا عَهِدَ عِنْدَكَ ۚ لَىِٕنْ كَشَفْتَ عَنَّا الرِّجْزَ لَنُؤْمِنَنَّ لَكَ وَلَنُرْسِلَنَّ مَعَكَ بَنِيْٓ اِ سْرَاۗءِيْلَ 134؀ۚ فَلَمَّا كَشَفْنَا عَنْهُمُ الرِّجْزَ اِلٰٓي اَجَلٍ هُمْ بٰلِغُوْهُ اِذَا هُمْ يَنْكُثُوْنَ 135؁) 7. Al-A'raf: 133-135). Each subsequent sign was greater than the previous one, through which the truthfulness of Musa (peace be upon him) became clearer and clearer.

48. 2. The purpose of these signs or punishments was that perhaps they might refrain from denial.
