أَفَأَنتَ تُسْمِعُ ٱلصُّمَّ أَوْ تَهْدِى ٱلْعُمْىَ وَمَن كَانَ فِى ضَلَـٰلٍ مُّبِينٍ ﴿40﴾
Can you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم) make the deaf to hear, or can you guide the blind or him who is in manifest error?
أَفَأَنتَ afa-anta Then can you
تُسْمِعُ tus'miʿu cause to hear
ٱلصُّمَّ l-ṣuma the deaf
أَوْ aw or
تَهْدِى tahdī guide
ٱلْعُمْىَ l-ʿum'ya the blind
وَمَن waman and (one) who
كَانَ kāna is
فِى in
ضَلَـٰلٍۢ ḍalālin an error
مُّبِينٍۢ mubīnin clear

40. 1. That is, the one for whom eternal wretchedness has been decreed, he is deaf and blind in terms of admonition and advice; through invitation and preaching, he cannot come to the straight path.
