أَمْ ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمْ كِتَـٰبًا مِّن قَبْلِهِۦ فَهُم بِهِۦ مُسْتَمْسِكُونَ ﴿21﴾
Or have We given them any Book before this (the Qur’ân) to which they are holding fast?
أَمْ am Or
ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمْ ātaynāhum have We given them
كِتَـٰبًۭا kitāban a book
مِّن min before it
قَبْلِهِۦ qablihi before it
فَهُم fahum so they
بِهِۦ bihi to it
مُسْتَمْسِكُونَ mus'tamsikūna (are) holding fast

21. 1. That is, is there any book before the Quran, in which they have been given the authority to worship others besides Allah, which they are firmly holding on to? That is, it is not so; rather, apart from following their forefathers, they have no evidence.
