وَلْيَخْشَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَوْ تَرَكُوا۟ مِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّةً ضِعَـٰفًا خَافُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمْ فَلْيَتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلْيَقُولُوا۟ قَوْلًا سَدِيدًا ﴿9﴾
And let those (executors and guardians) have the same fear in their minds as they would have for their own, if they had left weak offspring behind. So let them fear Allâh and speak right words.
وَلْيَخْشَ walyakhsha And let fear
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who
لَوْ law if
تَرَكُوا۟ tarakū they left
مِنْ min from
خَلْفِهِمْ khalfihim behind
ذُرِّيَّةًۭ dhurriyyatan offspring
ضِعَـٰفًا ḍiʿāfan weak
خَافُوا۟ khāfū (and) they would have feared
عَلَيْهِمْ ʿalayhim about them
فَلْيَتَّقُوا۟ falyattaqū So let them fear
ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah
وَلْيَقُولُوا۟ walyaqūlū and let them speak
قَوْلًۭا qawlan words
سَدِيدًا sadīdan appropriate

9. 1. According to some, its addressees are the executors (those to whom a will is made). They are being advised that those orphans under their care should be treated in the same way as they would like their own children to be treated after their death. According to others, its addressees are the general people, that they should treat orphans and other small children well. It is their responsibility to make the dying person understand good things so that he does not fall short in the rights of Allah nor in the rights of mankind, and in the will, he should keep both these matters in view. If he is well-off, then he should definitely make a will for one third of his wealth in favor of those among his close relatives who are poor and deserving of help, or make a will to spend it on some religious purpose or institution so that this wealth becomes provision for his Hereafter. And if he is not well-off, then he should be prevented from making a will for one third of his wealth so that his family does not later face poverty and need. Similarly, if someone wants to deprive his heirs, he should be stopped from this and it should be considered that if his children are faced with poverty and hunger, what would he feel at the thought of it.
