وَإِذَا حَضَرَ ٱلْقِسْمَةَ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ وَٱلْيَتَـٰمَىٰ وَٱلْمَسَـٰكِينُ فَٱرْزُقُوهُم مِّنْهُ وَقُولُوا۟ لَهُمْ قَوْلًا مَّعْرُوفًا ﴿8﴾
And when the relatives and the orphans and Al-Masâkîn (the poor) are present at the time of division, give them out of the property, and speak to them words of kindness and justice.
وَإِذَا wa-idhā And when
حَضَرَ ḥaḍara present
ٱلْقِسْمَةَ l-qis'mata (at) the (time of) division
أُو۟لُوا۟ ulū (of)
ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ l-qur'bā the relatives
وَٱلْيَتَـٰمَىٰ wal-yatāmā and the orphans
وَٱلْمَسَـٰكِينُ wal-masākīnu and the poor
فَٱرْزُقُوهُم fa-ur'zuqūhum then provide them
مِّنْهُ min'hu from it
وَقُولُوا۟ waqūlū and speak
لَهُمْ lahum to them
قَوْلًۭا qawlan words
مَّعْرُوفًۭا maʿrūfan (of) kindness

8. 1 Some scholars have considered this abrogated by the verse of inheritance, but the more authentic opinion is that this is not abrogated; rather, it is a very important moral instruction. That among the deserving relatives who do not have a share in the inheritance, give them something at the time of distribution as well. Also, speak to them with love and affection. Do not become like Qarun and Pharaoh upon seeing wealth coming to you.
