Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
31. 1. There is a difference of opinion regarding the definition of major sins. According to some, they are those sins for which a prescribed punishment (hadd) is set; according to others, they are those sins for which there is a severe warning or curse in the Quran or Hadith; some say that every act from which Allah or His Messenger ﷺ has prohibited as forbidden (tahrim) is a major sin. In reality, if any one of these things is found in a sin, then it is a major sin. Here, the principle is stated that any Muslim who avoids major sins such as shirk, disobedience to parents, lying, etc., We will forgive his minor sins. This subject is also mentioned in Surah Najm, but there, along with major sins, avoiding indecent acts (fawahish) is also considered necessary for the forgiveness of minor sins. In addition, persistence and continuity in minor sins also turn minor sins into major ones. Similarly, along with avoiding major sins, adherence to the commands and obligations of Islam and attention to righteous deeds is also extremely necessary. The noble Companions, may Allah be pleased with them all, understood the spirit of the Shariah, so they did not rely solely on the promise of forgiveness, but for the certain attainment of Allah's forgiveness and mercy, they took care of all the aforementioned matters. Whereas our actions are empty, but our hearts are filled with hopes and desires.
