لَكُنَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ ﴿169﴾
"We would have indeed been the chosen slaves of Allâh (true believers of Islâmic Monotheism)!"
لَكُنَّا lakunnā Certainly, we (would) have been
عِبَادَ ʿibāda slaves
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah
ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ l-mukh'laṣīna the chosen

169. 1. By "ذکر" is meant any divine book or prophet, that is, these disbelievers used to say before the revelation of the Quran that if we also had a heavenly book, just as the Torah, etc. were revealed to the earlier people, or if there was someone to admonish and advise us, then we too would have become the pure servants of Allah.
