سُوْرَةُ الصَّافَّاتِ
Surah As-Saaffaat (37) — Ayah 112
وَبَشَّرْنَـٰهُ بِإِسْحَـٰقَ نَبِيًّا مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ ﴿112﴾

And We gave him the glad tidings of Ishâq (Isaac) - a Prophet from the righteous.

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf

112. 1. After the aforementioned incident of Ibrahim (علیہ السلام), now the glad tidings of a son, Ishaq (علیہ السلام), and his prophethood are given, from which it is understood that the son who was ordered to be sacrificed earlier was Ismail (علیہ السلام). At that time, Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) had only one son, and Ishaq (علیہ السلام) was born after him. There is a difference of opinion among the commentators regarding who the sacrificial son was, Ismail (علیہ السلام) or Ishaq (علیہ السلام)? Imam Ibn Jarir considered Ishaq (علیہ السلام) to be the sacrificial son, while Ibn Kathir and most commentators considered Ismail (علیہ السلام) to be the sacrificial son, and this is the authentic view. Imam Shawkani has adopted a stance of suspension in this matter (for details, see Tafsir Fath al-Qadir and Tafsir Ibn Kathir).
