مِّنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ رِجَالٌ صَدَقُوا۟ مَا عَـٰهَدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ عَلَيْهِ ۖ فَمِنْهُم مَّن قَضَىٰ نَحْبَهُۥ وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَنتَظِرُ ۖ وَمَا بَدَّلُوا۟ تَبْدِيلًا ﴿23﴾
Among the believers are men who have been true to their covenant with Allâh [i.e. they have gone out for Jihâd (holy fighting), and showed not their backs to the disbelievers]; of them some have fulfilled their obligations (i.e. have been martyred); and some of them are still waiting, but they have never changed [i.e. they never proved treacherous to their covenant which they concluded with Allâh] in the least.
مِّنَ mina Among
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ l-mu'minīna the believers
رِجَالٌۭ rijālun (are) men
صَدَقُوا۟ ṣadaqū (who) have been true

عَـٰهَدُوا۟ ʿāhadū they promised Allah
ٱللَّهَ l-laha they promised Allah
عَلَيْهِ ۖ ʿalayhi [on it]
فَمِنْهُم famin'hum And among them
مَّن man (is he) who
قَضَىٰ qaḍā has fulfilled
نَحْبَهُۥ naḥbahu his vow
وَمِنْهُم wamin'hum and among them
مَّن man (is he) who
يَنتَظِرُ ۖ yantaẓiru awaits
وَمَا wamā And not
بَدَّلُوا۟ baddalū they alter
تَبْدِيلًۭا tabdīlan (by) any alteration

23-1. This verse was revealed about some of the Companions who, on this occasion, displayed remarkable feats of devotion, and among them are also those Companions who could not participate in the Battle of Badr but had made a pledge that if another battle arose, they would take full part in jihad. For example, Nadr bin Anas and others, who were eventually martyred fighting in the Battle of Uhud; there were more than eighty wounds of swords, spears, and arrows on their bodies. After martyrdom, his sister recognized him by the tip of his finger.

23-2. نَحْبَه، Nabh means pledge, vow, and death. The meaning is that among these truthful ones, some fulfilled their promise and vow by drinking the cup of martyrdom.

23-3. And the others are those who have not yet been united with the bride of martyrdom, but in longing for it, they participate in jihad and desire the blessing of martyrdom. They have not changed in this vow or pledge.
