And if the enemy had entered from all sides (of the city), and they had been exhorted to Al-Fitnah (i.e. to renegade from Islâm to polytheism), they would surely have committed it and would have hesitated thereupon but little.
وَلَوْ walaw And if
دُخِلَتْ dukhilat had been entered
عَلَيْهِم ʿalayhim upon them
مِّنْ min from
أَقْطَارِهَا aqṭārihā all its sides
ثُمَّ thumma then
سُئِلُوا۟ su-ilū they had been asked
ٱلْفِتْنَةَ l-fit'nata the treachery
لَـَٔاتَوْهَا laātawhā they (would) have certainly done it
وَمَا wamā and not
تَلَبَّثُوا۟ talabbathū they (would) have hesitated
بِهَآ bihā over it
إِلَّا illā except
يَسِيرًۭا yasīran a little

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

14-1. That is, if the enemy were to enter from all sides into Madinah or their homes and demand that they return to disbelief and polytheism, they would not hesitate at all, and at that time they would not even make the excuse of their homes being unsafe, rather they would immediately submit to the demand of polytheism. The meaning is that disbelief and polytheism are desirable to them and they rush towards it.
