74. 1. Two meanings are stated for this verse. One is that the prominent scholars of the Jews, when teaching their students, would instruct them to believe at the beginning of the day and disbelieve at its end, so that those who are truly Muslim would also become confused and apostatize. They would further emphasize to their students that they should only outwardly appear Muslim, but in reality and truth remain Jews, and not think that just as the religion, revelation, law, and knowledge and virtue have been given to them, the same could be given to anyone else, or that someone else could be on the truth instead of them, who could establish a proof against them before Allah and declare them wrong. According to this meaning, leaving aside the parenthetical clause, up to "عند ربکم" the entire statement would be that of the Jews. The second meaning is that, O Jews! All these actions and conspiracies to suppress and erase the truth are because, firstly, you are grieved and envious that just as knowledge, virtue, revelation, law, and religion were given to you, now the same knowledge, virtue, and religion have been given to someone else. Secondly, you also fear and are apprehensive that if this call to truth flourishes and takes root, not only will you lose the prestige and honor you have in the world, but the truth you have concealed will also be exposed, and on this basis, these people will establish a proof against you before Allah. Whereas you should know that religion and law are Allah’s grace, and this is not anyone’s inheritance, rather He gives His grace to whomever He wills. And He knows to whom this grace should be given.
