Surah Aal-i-Imraan (3) — Ayah 169

وَلَا تَحْسَبَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ قُتِلُوا۟ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ أَمْوَٰتًۢا ۚ بَلْ أَحْيَآءٌ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ يُرْزَقُونَ ﴿169﴾
Think not of those who are killed in the Way of Allâh as dead. Nay, they are alive, with their Lord, and they have provision.
وَلَا walā And (do) not
تَحْسَبَنَّ taḥsabanna think
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna (of) those who
قُتِلُوا۟ qutilū are killed
فِى in
سَبِيلِ sabīli (the) way
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah
أَمْوَٰتًۢا ۚ amwātan (as) dead
بَلْ bal Nay
أَحْيَآءٌ aḥyāon They are alive
عِندَ ʿinda near
رَبِّهِمْ rabbihim their Lord
يُرْزَقُونَ yur'zaqūna they are given provision

169. 1. Is the life of the martyrs real or metaphorical? Certainly, it is real, but its perception is not available to the people of this world, as the Quran has clarified. See (Surah Baqarah, verse number 154). Then what is the meaning of this life? Some say that their souls are returned to their graves and there they enjoy the blessings of Allah. Some say that the fragrances of the fruits of Paradise reach them, which keep their souls fragrant. But from the hadith, a third form is known, and therefore that is the correct view, which is that their souls are placed inside the bodies or chests of green birds, and they roam in Paradise, eating and enjoying its blessings (Fath al-Qadeer, referencing Sahih Muslim).
