Surah Aal-i-Imraan (3) — Ayah 165

أَوَلَمَّآ أَصَـٰبَتْكُم مُّصِيبَةٌ قَدْ أَصَبْتُم مِّثْلَيْهَا قُلْتُمْ أَنَّىٰ هَـٰذَا ۖ قُلْ هُوَ مِنْ عِندِ أَنفُسِكُمْ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ ﴿165﴾
(What is the matter with you?) When a single disaster smites you, although you smote (your enemies) with one twice as great, you say: "From where does this come to us?" Say (to them), "It is from yourselves (because of your evil deeds)." And Allâh has power over all things.
أَوَلَمَّآ awalammā Or when
أَصَـٰبَتْكُم aṣābatkum struck you
مُّصِيبَةٌۭ muṣībatun disaster
قَدْ qad surely
أَصَبْتُم aṣabtum you (had) struck (them)
مِّثْلَيْهَا mith'layhā twice of it
قُلْتُمْ qul'tum you said
أَنَّىٰ annā From where
هَـٰذَا ۖ hādhā (is) this
قُلْ qul Say
هُوَ huwa It
مِنْ min (is)
عِندِ ʿindi from
أَنفُسِكُمْ ۗ anfusikum yourselves
إِنَّ inna Indeed
ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah
عَلَىٰ ʿalā (is) on
كُلِّ kulli every
شَىْءٍۢ shayin thing
قَدِيرٌۭ qadīrun All-Powerful

165. 1. That is, in Uhud, seventy of your men were martyred, while in Badr you had killed seventy disbelievers and taken seventy prisoners.

165. 2. That is, because of your mistake, which you made by leaving the mountain post despite the emphatic command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. As detailed earlier, due to this mistake, a group of disbelievers got the opportunity to attack again from that pass.
