Surah Aal-i-Imraan (3) — Ayah 128

لَيْسَ لَكَ مِنَ ٱلْأَمْرِ شَىْءٌ أَوْ يَتُوبَ عَلَيْهِمْ أَوْ يُعَذِّبَهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ ظَـٰلِمُونَ ﴿128﴾
Not for you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم, but for Allâh) is the decision; whether He turns in mercy to (pardons) them or punishes them; verily, they are the Zâlimûn (polytheists, disobedients, and wrong-doers).
لَيْسَ laysa Not

ٱلْأَمْرِ l-amri the decision
شَىْءٌ shayon (of) anything
أَوْ aw whether
يَتُوبَ yatūba He turns
عَلَيْهِمْ ʿalayhim to them
أَوْ aw or
يُعَذِّبَهُمْ yuʿadhibahum punishes them
فَإِنَّهُمْ fa-innahum for indeed, they
ظَـٰلِمُونَ ẓālimūna (are) wrongdoers

128. 1. That is, to guide these disbelievers or to make any kind of decision regarding their matter is entirely within Allah's authority. It is mentioned in the ahadith that during the Battle of Uhud, the blessed teeth of the Prophet ﷺ were martyred and his blessed face was also wounded, so he ﷺ said, "How can that nation attain success which has wounded its Prophet?" In this way, he ﷺ expressed despair regarding their guidance. Upon this, this verse was revealed. Similarly, in some narrations, it is mentioned that he ﷺ also performed Qunoot Nazilah for some disbelievers in which he supplicated against them, upon which Allah Almighty revealed this verse. Thus, he ﷺ stopped the supplication against them (Ibn Kathir, Fath al-Qadeer). Those people should take heed from this verse who declare the Prophet ﷺ to be the absolute authority, for he ﷺ did not even have the authority to guide anyone to the right path, even though he ﷺ was sent to call towards that very path.

128. 2. These tribes whom he supplicated against, by Allah's guidance, all became Muslims. From this, it is understood that the absolute authority and knower of the unseen is only Allah Almighty.
