And they ask you to hasten on the torment (for them): and had it not been for a term appointed, the torment would certainly have come to them. And surely, it will come upon them suddenly while they perceive not!

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

53-1. That is, instead of obeying the Prophet, they say: If you are truthful, then bring down the punishment upon us.

53-2. That is, their actions and words certainly deserve that they should be wiped out from the face of existence immediately, but Our way is that We grant every nation respite until a fixed time. When that period of action ends, then Our punishment comes.

53-3. That is, when the appointed time for punishment arrives, it will come so suddenly that they will not even realize it. This appointed time is what He has written for the people of Makkah, meaning captivity and killing in the Battle of Badr, or the occurrence of the Day of Judgment, after which there is nothing but punishment for the disbelievers.
