And those who had desired (for a position like) his position the day before, began to say: "Know you not that it is Allâh Who enlarges the provision or restricts it to whomsoever He pleases of His slaves. Had it not been that Allâh was Gracious to us, He could have caused the earth to swallow us up (also)! Know you not that the disbelievers will never be successful.

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

82-1. By "makaan" is meant the worldly rank and status that is temporarily granted in this world. Just as it was given to Qarun, the meaning is that those who desired the wealth and splendor of Qarun, when they saw the exemplary end of Qarun, said that wealth and riches are not proof that Allah Almighty is pleased with the owner of wealth. Have you not seen that Allah Almighty gives more wealth to some and less to others? This is related to His will and perfect wisdom, which no one knows except Him. Abundance of wealth is not a sign of His pleasure, nor is scarcity of wealth a sign of His displeasure, nor is it a criterion of virtue.

82-2. That is, we too would have faced the same fate that Qarun faced.

82-3. That is, Qarun, after attaining wealth, instead of being grateful, chose the path of ingratitude and disobedience, so see what his end was? Look, for one who has an eye to take a lesson.
