وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ هُوَ وَجُنُودُهُۥ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ ٱلْحَقِّ وَظَنُّوٓا۟ أَنَّهُمْ إِلَيْنَا لَا يُرْجَعُونَ ﴿39﴾
And he and his hosts were arrogant in the land, without right, and they thought that they would never return to Us.
وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ wa-is'takbara And he was arrogant
هُوَ huwa And he was arrogant
وَجُنُودُهُۥ wajunūduhu and his hosts
فِى in
ٱلْأَرْضِ l-arḍi the land
بِغَيْرِ bighayri without
ٱلْحَقِّ l-ḥaqi right
وَظَنُّوٓا۟ waẓannū and they thought
أَنَّهُمْ annahum that they
إِلَيْنَا ilaynā to Us
لَا not
يُرْجَعُونَ yur'jaʿūna will be returned

39-1. By "land" is meant the land of Egypt where Pharaoh was the ruler and considered himself great, that is, they had no such evidence that could refute the miraculous proofs of Musa (عليه السلام), but displaying arrogance, they chose the path of stubbornness and denial.
