وَٱلَّذِىٓ أَطْمَعُ أَن يَغْفِرَ لِى خَطِيٓـَٔتِى يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ ﴿82﴾
"And Who, I hope, will forgive me my faults on the Day of Recompense, (the Day of Resurrection).
وَٱلَّذِىٓ wa-alladhī And the One Who
أَطْمَعُ aṭmaʿu I hope
أَن an that
يَغْفِرَ yaghfira He will forgive
لِى for me
خَطِيٓـَٔتِى khaṭīatī my faults
يَوْمَ yawma (on the) Day
ٱلدِّينِ l-dīni (of) the Judgment

84-1. Here, hope is in the meaning of certainty. Because hope from a great personality is equivalent to certainty, and Allah Almighty is the greatest being in the universe, so hope attached to Him—why would it not be certain? That is why the commentators say that wherever the word عَسَیٰ is used for Allah in the Quran, it is in the sense of certainty. The word خطیئتی is in the singular form (خطیئۃ), but it is in the meaning of the plural خطایا. Although the Prophets (peace be upon them) are infallible, so the occurrence of any major sin from them is not possible, yet considering some of their actions as shortcomings, they will seek forgiveness in the court of Allah.
