Surah Al-Furqaan (25) — Ayah 65

وَٱلَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا ٱصْرِفْ عَنَّا عَذَابَ جَهَنَّمَ ۖ إِنَّ عَذَابَهَا كَانَ غَرَامًا ﴿65﴾
And those who say: "Our Lord! Avert from us the torment of Hell. Verily its torment is ever an inseparable, permanent punishment."
وَٱلَّذِينَ wa-alladhīna And those who
يَقُولُونَ yaqūlūna say
رَبَّنَا rabbanā Our Lord
ٱصْرِفْ iṣ'rif Avert
عَنَّا ʿannā from us
عَذَابَ ʿadhāba the punishment
جَهَنَّمَ ۖ jahannama (of) Hell
إِنَّ inna Indeed
عَذَابَهَا ʿadhābahā its punishment
كَانَ kāna is
غَرَامًا gharāman inseparable

65-1 From this it is understood that the servants of the Most Merciful are those who, on one hand, rise at night to worship, and on the other hand, they are also fearful that they may not be seized by Allah for any mistake or shortcoming; therefore, they seek refuge from the punishment of Hell. Thus, despite worship and obedience to Allah, a person should not become fearless of Allah’s punishment and reckoning, nor should he become arrogant or proud over his worship and obedience to Allah. The same meaning has been expressed at another place as follows: (وَالَّذِيْنَ يُؤْتُوْنَ مَآ اٰتَوْا وَّقُلُوْبُهُمْ وَجِلَةٌ اَنَّهُمْ اِلٰى رَبِّهِمْ رٰجِعُوْنَ) 23. Al-Mu’minun: 60) And those who give what they give while their hearts are fearful because they are to return to their Lord. The fear is not only about being presented in the court of Allah, but also whether their charity and alms are accepted or not. In the hadith, regarding the explanation of this verse, it is mentioned that Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about this verse, whether it refers to those who drink alcohol and steal? He ﷺ replied, “No, O daughter of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)! Rather, it refers to those who fast, pray, and give charity, but despite this, they fear that their deeds may not be accepted.” (At-Tirmidhi)
