Surah Al-Anbiyaa (21) — Ayah 43

أَمْ لَهُمْ ءَالِهَةٌ تَمْنَعُهُم مِّن دُونِنَا ۚ لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ نَصْرَ أَنفُسِهِمْ وَلَا هُم مِّنَّا يُصْحَبُونَ ﴿43﴾
Or have they âlihah (gods) who can guard them from Us? They have no power to help themselves, nor can they be protected from Us (i.e. from Our Torment).
أَمْ am Or
لَهُمْ lahum have they
ءَالِهَةٌۭ ālihatun gods
تَمْنَعُهُم tamnaʿuhum (to) defend them
مِّن min from
دُونِنَا ۚ dūninā Us
لَا Not
يَسْتَطِيعُونَ yastaṭīʿūna they are able
نَصْرَ naṣra (to) help
أَنفُسِهِمْ anfusihim themselves

43. 1. The meaning is 'وَلَا ھُمْ یَجْارُوْنَ مِنْ عَذَابِنَا' — nor are they protected from Our punishment, that is, they are neither able to help themselves nor to save themselves from Allah's punishment, so how can they help others on their behalf and how can they save them from punishment?
