سُوْرَةُ طٰهٰ

Surah Taa-Haa (20) — Ayah 47

فَأْتِيَاهُ فَقُولَآ إِنَّا رَسُولَا رَبِّكَ فَأَرْسِلْ مَعَنَا بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ وَلَا تُعَذِّبْهُمْ ۖ قَدْ جِئْنَـٰكَ بِـَٔايَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّكَ ۖ وَٱلسَّلَـٰمُ عَلَىٰ مَنِ ٱتَّبَعَ ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ ﴿47﴾
"So go you both to him, and say: ‘Verily, we are Messengers of your Lord, so let the Children of Israel go with us, and torment them not; indeed, we have come with a sign from your Lord! And peace will be upon him who follows the guidance!
فَأْتِيَاهُ fatiyāhu So go to him
فَقُولَآ faqūlā and say
إِنَّا innā Indeed, we
رَسُولَا rasūlā both (are) Messengers
رَبِّكَ rabbika (of) your Lord
فَأَرْسِلْ fa-arsil so send
مَعَنَا maʿanā with us
بَنِىٓ banī (the) Children of Israel
إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ is'rāīla (the) Children of Israel
وَلَا walā and (do) not
تُعَذِّبْهُمْ ۖ tuʿadhib'hum torment them
قَدْ qad Verily
جِئْنَـٰكَ ji'nāka we came to you
بِـَٔايَةٍۢ biāyatin with a Sign
مِّن min from
رَّبِّكَ ۖ rabbika your Lord
وَٱلسَّلَـٰمُ wal-salāmu And peace
عَلَىٰ ʿalā on
مَنِ mani (one) who
ٱتَّبَعَ ittabaʿa follows
ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ l-hudā the Guidance

47. 1. This is not a greeting of salutation, but rather an invitation towards peace and security. Just as the Prophet ﷺ wrote in the letter to the Roman emperor Heraclius: و اَسْلِمْ ، تَسْلَمْ (Accept Islam, you will be in peace). In this way, at the beginning of the letter, he also wrote (وَالسَّلٰمُ عَلٰي مَنِ اتَّبَعَ الْهُدٰى) 20. Ta Ha:47) (Ibn Kathir). This means that if one has to address a non-Muslim in a letter or gathering, he should be greeted with these words, which are conditional upon adopting guidance.
