Surah Al-Baqara (2) — Ayah 73

The Cow · Medinan · Juz 1 · Page 11

So We said: "Strike him (the dead man) with a piece of it (the cow)." Thus Allâh brings the dead to life and shows you His Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) so that you may understand.
فَقُلْنَا faqul'nā So We said
ٱضْرِبُوهُ iḍ'ribūhu Strike him
بِبَعْضِهَا ۚ bibaʿḍihā with a part of it
كَذَٰلِكَ kadhālika Like this
يُحْىِ yuḥ'yī revives
ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah
ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ l-mawtā the dead
وَيُرِيكُمْ wayurīkum and shows you
ءَايَـٰتِهِۦ āyātihi His Signs
لَعَلَّكُمْ laʿallakum perhaps you may
تَعْقِلُونَ taʿqilūna use your intellect

73. 1. By proving the resurrection of the murdered person, Allah Almighty is announcing His power to resurrect all humans on the Day of Judgment. The resurrection of the dead on the Day of Judgment has always been a cause of astonishment for the deniers of the Hereafter, therefore Allah Almighty has mentioned this issue in various ways throughout the Noble Quran. In Surah Al-Baqarah itself, Allah Almighty has given five examples of this. One example has already passed in 2:64 Al-Baqarah 56. The second example is this very story. The third example is in the second juz, verse number 243, verse The fourth is verse number 259, verse 2:259. And the fifth example is in the following verse, regarding the four birds (tayyur arba‘a) of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him).
