Surah Al-Baqara (2) — Ayah 227

وَإِنْ عَزَمُوا۟ ٱلطَّلَـٰقَ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ ﴿227﴾
And if they decide upon divorce, then Allâh is All-Hearer, All-Knower.
وَإِنْ wa-in And if
عَزَمُوا۟ ʿazamū they resolve
ٱلطَّلَـٰقَ l-ṭalāqa (on) [the] divorce
فَإِنَّ fa-inna then indeed
ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah
سَمِيعٌ samīʿun (is) All-Hearing
عَلِيمٌۭ ʿalīmun All-Knowing

227. 1. These words indicate that divorce will not automatically take place merely after the passage of four months (as is the view of some scholars). Rather, divorce will occur when the husband pronounces it, and the court will also compel him to do so, as is the view of the majority of scholars.
