ٱلَّذِينَ ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ يَتْلُونَهُۥ حَقَّ تِلَاوَتِهِۦٓ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِۦ ۗ وَمَن يَكْفُرْ بِهِۦ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ ﴿121﴾
Those (who embraced Islâm from Banî Israel) to whom We gave the Book [the Taurât (Torah)] [or those (Muhammad’s صلى الله عليه وسلم companions) to whom We have given the Book (the Qur’ân)] recite it (i.e. obey its orders and follow its teachings) as it should be recited (i.e. followed), they are the ones who believe therein. And whoso disbelieve in it (the Qur’ân), those are they who are the losers. (Tafsir Al-Qurtubî).
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna Those
ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمُ ātaynāhumu We have given them
ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ l-kitāba the Book
يَتْلُونَهُۥ yatlūnahu recite it
حَقَّ ḥaqqa (as it has the) right
تِلَاوَتِهِۦٓ tilāwatihi (of) its recitation
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ulāika Those (people)
يُؤْمِنُونَ yu'minūna believe
بِهِۦ ۗ bihi in it
وَمَن waman And whoever
يَكْفُرْ yakfur disbelieves
بِهِۦ bihi in it
فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ fa-ulāika then those
هُمُ humu they
ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ l-khāsirūna (are) the losers

121. 1 After the necessary details of the morals and character of the People of the Book, in this verse, the virtues of those among them who were righteous and of good character, and the news of their being believers, are being mentioned. Among them are Abdullah bin Salam and other such individuals, who were granted the ability to accept Islam from among the Jews.

121. 2 They recite it in the manner in which it deserves to be recited, that is, several meanings have been stated, for example: (1) They recite with full attention and reflection. When Paradise is mentioned, they ask for Paradise, and when Hell is mentioned, they seek refuge from it. (2) They consider its lawful as lawful, its unlawful as unlawful, and do not distort the word of Allah (as other Jews did). (3) Whatever is written in it, they convey to the people and do not conceal any of its matters. (4) They act upon its clear commandments and believe in its allegorical verses, and those matters which they do not understand, they have them resolved by the scholars. (5) They follow every single command of it (Fath al-Qadeer). In reality, all these meanings are included in the true recitation, and guidance is the share of those who take care of the aforementioned matters.

121. 3 Whoever among the People of the Book does not believe in the Prophethood of the Prophet ﷺ will go to Hell (Ibn Kathir).
