فَعَسَىٰ رَبِّىٓ أَن يُؤْتِيَنِ خَيْرًا مِّن جَنَّتِكَ وَيُرْسِلَ عَلَيْهَا حُسْبَانًا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَتُصْبِحَ صَعِيدًا زَلَقًا ﴿40﴾
"It may be that my Lord will give me something better than your garden, and will send on it Husbân (torment, bolt) from the sky, then it will be a barren slippery earth.
فَعَسَىٰ faʿasā It may be
رَبِّىٓ rabbī that my Lord
أَن an that my Lord
يُؤْتِيَنِ yu'tiyani will give me
خَيْرًۭا khayran better
مِّن min than
جَنَّتِكَ jannatika your garden
وَيُرْسِلَ wayur'sila and will send
عَلَيْهَا ʿalayhā upon it
حُسْبَانًۭا ḥus'bānan a calamity
مِّنَ mina from
ٱلسَّمَآءِ l-samāi the sky
فَتُصْبِحَ fatuṣ'biḥa then it will become
صَعِيدًۭا ṣaʿīdan ground
زَلَقًا zalaqan slippery

40. 2 حَسْبَان, on the pattern of غُفْرَان. It is from حساب, meaning such a punishment that comes as a result of someone's deeds. That is, He may call to account through a heavenly punishment. And this place, which is now a lush and flourishing garden, may become a barren and plain field.
