ذَٰلِكَ جَزَآؤُهُم بِأَنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا وَقَالُوٓا۟ أَءِذَا كُنَّا عِظَـٰمًا وَرُفَـٰتًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ خَلْقًا جَدِيدًا ﴿98﴾
That is their recompense, because they denied Our Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and said: "When we are bones and fragments, shall we really be raised up as a new creation?"
ذَٰلِكَ dhālika That
جَزَآؤُهُم jazāuhum (is) their recompense
بِأَنَّهُمْ bi-annahum because they
كَفَرُوا۟ kafarū disbelieved
بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا biāyātinā in Our Verses
وَقَالُوٓا۟ waqālū and said
أَءِذَا a-idhā When
كُنَّا kunnā we are
عِظَـٰمًۭا ʿiẓāman bones
وَرُفَـٰتًا warufātan and crumbled particles
أَءِنَّا a-innā will we
لَمَبْعُوثُونَ lamabʿūthūna surely (be) resurrected
خَلْقًۭا khalqan (as) a creation
جَدِيدًا jadīdan new

98. 1. That is, this punishment of Hell will be given to them because they did not affirm the verses We revealed and did not reflect upon the manifest signs spread throughout the universe, due to which they considered the occurrence of the Resurrection and life after death to be impossible, and said: How can we be given a new creation after our bones have become crumbled to dust?
