Surah Al-Israa (17) — Ayah 83

وَإِذَآ أَنْعَمْنَا عَلَى ٱلْإِنسَـٰنِ أَعْرَضَ وَنَـَٔا بِجَانِبِهِۦ ۖ وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ كَانَ يَـُٔوسًا ﴿83﴾
And when We bestow Our Grace on man (the disbeliever), he turns away and becomes arrogant (far away from the Right Path). And when evil touches him, he is in great despair.
وَإِذَآ wa-idhā And when
أَنْعَمْنَا anʿamnā We bestow favor
عَلَى ʿalā on
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنِ l-insāni man
أَعْرَضَ aʿraḍa he turns away
وَنَـَٔا wanaā and becomes remote
بِجَانِبِهِۦ ۖ bijānibihi on his side
وَإِذَا wa-idhā And when
مَسَّهُ massahu touches him
ٱلشَّرُّ l-sharu the evil
كَانَ kāna he is
يَـُٔوسًۭا yaūsan (in) despair

83. 1. In this, the state and condition of man is mentioned, in which he generally finds himself in times of prosperity and adversity; in prosperity, he forgets Allah, and in adversity, he becomes despondent, but the case of the people of faith is different from this in both situations.
