Surah Al-Israa (17) — Ayah 76

وَإِن كَادُوا۟ لَيَسْتَفِزُّونَكَ مِنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ لِيُخْرِجُوكَ مِنْهَا ۖ وَإِذًا لَّا يَلْبَثُونَ خِلَـٰفَكَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا ﴿76﴾
And verily they were about to frighten you so much as to drive you out from the land. But in that case they would not have stayed (therein) after you, except for a little while.
وَإِن wa-in And indeed
كَادُوا۟ kādū they were about
لَيَسْتَفِزُّونَكَ layastafizzūnaka (to) scare you
مِنَ mina from
ٱلْأَرْضِ l-arḍi the land
لِيُخْرِجُوكَ liyukh'rijūka that they evict you
مِنْهَا ۖ min'hā from it
وَإِذًۭا wa-idhan But then
لَّا not
يَلْبَثُونَ yalbathūna they (would) have stayed
خِلَـٰفَكَ khilāfaka after you
إِلَّا illā except
قَلِيلًۭا qalīlan a little

76. 1. This is a reference to the plot that the Quraysh of Makkah devised to expel the Prophet ﷺ from Makkah, from which Allah saved him.
76. 2. That is, if according to their plan they had expelled you from Makkah, then they too would not have remained for long after that, meaning they would have been seized by the punishment of Allah.
