Surah Yusuf (12) — Ayah 88

فَلَمَّا دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ قَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْعَزِيزُ مَسَّنَا وَأَهْلَنَا ٱلضُّرُّ وَجِئْنَا بِبِضَـٰعَةٍ مُّزْجَىٰةٍ فَأَوْفِ لَنَا ٱلْكَيْلَ وَتَصَدَّقْ عَلَيْنَآ ۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَجْزِى ٱلْمُتَصَدِّقِينَ ﴿88﴾
Then, when they entered unto him [Yûsuf (Joseph)], they said: "O ruler of the land! A hard time has hit us and our family, and we have brought but poor capital, so pay us full measure and be charitable to us. Truly, Allâh does reward the charitable."
فَلَمَّا falammā So when
دَخَلُوا۟ dakhalū they entered
عَلَيْهِ ʿalayhi upon him
قَالُوا۟ qālū they said
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا yāayyuhā O Aziz
ٱلْعَزِيزُ l-ʿazīzu O Aziz
مَسَّنَا massanā Has touched us
وَأَهْلَنَا wa-ahlanā and our family
ٱلضُّرُّ l-ḍuru the adversity
وَجِئْنَا waji'nā and we have come
بِبِضَـٰعَةٍۢ bibiḍāʿatin with goods
مُّزْجَىٰةٍۢ muz'jātin (of) little value
فَأَوْفِ fa-awfi but pay (in) full
لَنَا lanā to us
ٱلْكَيْلَ l-kayla the measure
وَتَصَدَّقْ wataṣaddaq and be charitable
عَلَيْنَآ ۖ ʿalaynā to us
إِنَّ inna Indeed
ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah
يَجْزِى yajzī rewards
ٱلْمُتَصَدِّقِينَ l-mutaṣadiqīna the charitable

88. 1. This is their third time going to Egypt.
88. 2. That is, the price (thaman) we have brought to buy grain is very little and insignificant.
88. 3. That is, do not look at our meager capital, give us full measure in exchange for it.
88. 4. That is, accept our meager capital and show kindness and charity to us. And some commentators have interpreted this to mean: by freeing our brother Binyamin, show kindness to us.
