Surah Yusuf (12) — Ayah 83

قَالَ بَلْ سَوَّلَتْ لَكُمْ أَنفُسُكُمْ أَمْرًا ۖ فَصَبْرٌ جَمِيلٌ ۖ عَسَى ٱللَّهُ أَن يَأْتِيَنِى بِهِمْ جَمِيعًا ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ ﴿83﴾
He [Ya‘qûb (Jacob)] said: "Nay, but your ownselves have beguiled you into something. So patience is most fitting (for me). May be Allâh will bring them (back) all to me. Truly He! Only He is All-Knowing, All-Wise."
قَالَ qāla He said
بَلْ bal Nay
سَوَّلَتْ sawwalat have enticed
لَكُمْ lakum you
أَنفُسُكُمْ anfusukum your souls
أَمْرًۭا ۖ amran something
فَصَبْرٌۭ faṣabrun so patience
جَمِيلٌ ۖ jamīlun (is) beautiful
عَسَى ʿasā Perhaps
ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah
أَن an will bring them to me
يَأْتِيَنِى yatiyanī will bring them to me
بِهِمْ bihim will bring them to me
جَمِيعًا ۚ jamīʿan all
إِنَّهُۥ innahu Indeed, He
هُوَ huwa He
ٱلْعَلِيمُ l-ʿalīmu (is) the All-Knower
ٱلْحَكِيمُ l-ḥakīmu All-Wise

83. 1 Since Hazrat Yaqub (علیہ السلام) was unaware of the reality of the situation and Allah had not informed him of the actual event through revelation, he thought that these sons of his had made up the story themselves. What exactly had they done with Binyamin? Hazrat Yaqub (علیہ السلام) did not have definite knowledge of this, but based on the incident with Yusuf (علیہ السلام), he understandably had doubts and suspicions about them.

83. 2 Now again, there was no option except patience, however, along with patience, he did not let go of hope. for Yusuf (علیہ السلام), Binyamin, and that eldest son who, out of shame, stayed there in Egypt, thinking that either his father would allow him to return in this state or he would somehow bring Binyamin back with him.
