Surah Yusuf (12) — Ayah 73

قَالُوا۟ تَٱللَّهِ لَقَدْ عَلِمْتُم مَّا جِئْنَا لِنُفْسِدَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا كُنَّا سَـٰرِقِينَ ﴿73﴾
They said: "By Allâh! Indeed you know that we came not to make mischief in the land, and we are no thieves!"
قَالُوا۟ qālū They said
تَٱللَّهِ tal-lahi By Allah
لَقَدْ laqad certainly
عَلِمْتُم ʿalim'tum you know
مَّا not
جِئْنَا ji'nā we came
لِنُفْسِدَ linuf'sida that we cause corruption
فِى in
ٱلْأَرْضِ l-arḍi the land
وَمَا wamā and not
كُنَّا kunnā we are
سَـٰرِقِينَ sāriqīna thieves

73. 1. Since the brothers of Yusuf ؑ were unaware of the plan that Yusuf ؑ had prepared, they swore an oath denying that they were thieves and that they caused corruption in the land.
