Surah Yusuf (12) — Ayah 66

قَالَ لَنْ أُرْسِلَهُۥ مَعَكُمْ حَتَّىٰ تُؤْتُونِ مَوْثِقًا مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ لَتَأْتُنَّنِى بِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَن يُحَاطَ بِكُمْ ۖ فَلَمَّآ ءَاتَوْهُ مَوْثِقَهُمْ قَالَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ مَا نَقُولُ وَكِيلٌ ﴿66﴾
He [Ya‘qûb (Jacob)] said: "I will not send him with you until you swear a solemn oath to me in Allâh’s Name, that you will bring him back to me unless you are yourselves surrounded (by enemies)," And when they had sworn their solemn oath, he said: "Allâh is the Witness to what we have said."
قَالَ qāla He said
لَنْ lan Never
أُرْسِلَهُۥ ur'silahu will I send him
مَعَكُمْ maʿakum with you
حَتَّىٰ ḥattā until
تُؤْتُونِ tu'tūni you give to me
مَوْثِقًۭا mawthiqan a promise
مِّنَ mina by
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah
لَتَأْتُنَّنِى latatunnanī that surely you will bring him to me
بِهِۦٓ bihi that surely you will bring him to me
إِلَّآ illā unless
أَن an that
يُحَاطَ yuḥāṭa you are surrounded
بِكُمْ ۖ bikum you are surrounded
فَلَمَّآ falammā And when
ءَاتَوْهُ ātawhu they had given him
مَوْثِقَهُمْ mawthiqahum their promise
قَالَ qāla he said
ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah
عَلَىٰ ʿalā over
مَا what
نَقُولُ naqūlu we say
وَكِيلٌۭ wakīlun (is) a Guardian

66. 1. That is, if a collective calamity befalls you or you are all destroyed or captured, from which you are not able to free yourselves, then it is a different matter. In this situation, you will be excused.
